Obituary for Mary Gwendolyn McNeil (Reive)

McNEIL (Reive), Gwen
It is with broken hearts that we made the hard decision to say goodbye to our loved mom, grandma and great-grandma. On Wednesday April 28, following a short, non-COVID related illness, and surrounded by the love of her family, Gwen died peacefully in the ICU at the St. Catharines Site. Mom has been reunited with her husband Jim (1989), and leaves their children Kathy, Rod (Leslie), granddaughter Joanne (Levi), great-grandchildren, Taylor and Kailey, and step-granddaughter Kelsey (Ryan) to mourn her loss. Mom is also survived by her nieces Stephanie (Tim [Jacqueline, Sandra, Gillian]), Janice (Perry [Natalie, Nick]), and nephew David in Canada and brother-in-law Alistair, niece Kelly (Peter [Chlo, Lewis, Kristi]) and nephew Ross (Suzanne [Karter]) in Scotland. Mom is also survived by many cousins of the Reive family.
Gwen was born in Fort William (now Thunder Bay) on November 30, 1932. She moved to Lefroy with her mother Jessie (1995) and sister Sheila (2018) after the loss of her father, Vince Reive, in a seafaring mishap in 1940. She moved to Toronto in her 20’s and met Dad on a blind date. They married in 1958 and in 1966 the family moved to St. Catharines for Dad’s work at Domtar. Mom worked at Sterling Varnish until just before Dad’s death. Mom was a faithful member of Mountainview United Church, singing in the choir until last March when COVID put a halt to our gathering together. Mom was a loving and lovely lady who enjoyed life, loved to read, listen to music (mostly classical), watch baseball, basketball and curling. Her loss has left a large void in many lives. It is comforting to know that Mom was loved by so many.
Memorial donations can be made to Mountainview United Church (General Fund) or to the Niagara Health Foundation. Due to COVID restrictions, we plan to hold a celebration of life when we can once again get together. We love you Mom. You will be in our hearts forever.
