Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Gilchrist (McLaren)

GILCHRIST, Mary Elizabeth - Passed away peacefully at Upper Canada Lodge at the age of 96. Beloved wife and predeceased by husband Norman; Cherished mother of Alan (Elaine), David (Claudia) and Iain (who died in infancy). Mary will also be sadly missed by grandchildren Christopher (Megan) and Andrew (Jodi). She was absolutely delighted by the arrival of great-grandchildren Hannah, Arabella, Elise and Lachlan. She is survived by brother John (June) and Ella (her older sister). and was predeceased by siblings Robert, George and Catharine.
Mary was born in 1926 in Cruickness (Inverkeithing) on the banks of the Firth of Forth opposite Edinburgh in which city she resided for much of her young life. She always liked to mention that she attended the same school as Sean Connery (although not at the same time she would quickly add). Following her marriage to Norman and the loss of her baby, Iain, the family immigrated to Canada in 1958. She was instrumental in helping her family navigate difficult circumstances when shortly following her arrival with her two sons in Canada, Norm's employment ended with the shocking cancellation of the Avro Arrow project. She also was devoted totally to her husband's care when he later developed an extreme form of rheumatoid arthritis. She was a modest and unassuming yet truly powerful symbol of courage in coping with the challenges which can occur in life.
Mary will be remembered by all who were privileged to meet her as a courageous, kind, considerate and loving lady. She greatly respected the rights and views of others and was always open to putting the interests of others before her own.
Mary's family gratefully extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. I. Ahmed and the wonderful staff at Upper Canada Lodge (Mary's home for thirteen years) for their remarkable care and support and to Passfield Mortuary Services for their greatly appreciated assistance during this difficult time.
In keeping with Mary's wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to PASSFIELD MORTUARY SERVICES INC. A private family service will occur at a later date. Mary was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
