Obituary for Joan Margaret Brook (Clucas)

Joan Margaret Brook (nee Clucas)
August 10, 1925-September 10, 2022

Joan died peacefully in her sleep at her residence at Martindale Place in St. Catharines at the age of 97. She had recently returned from her favourite place; her cottage on Lake Joseph where she had spent the summer with much of her family. Born in Liverpool, yet proudly disdained both the Scouser accent and the Beatles. Joan was a Froebel trained kindergarten teacher. She often reminded us of her seven years of teaching in England, fifty students at once in her classroom for the entire day. She emigrated to Canada in 1955 with her then husband Roger. After a brief penance in Heart’s Content, Newfoundland where Alison (Chris Wittig) was born, they settled in St Catharines, Ontario. After Gillian (Stephen Yorke) and Anthony (Isabelle Drapeau) were in school, Joan spent countless hours volunteering at the Niagara Children’s Centre with the Maycourt Club and for Save the Children. Joan enjoyed her grandchildren (Jack and Nicholas Wittig; Rachel and Declan Yorke; Riley Brook), friends, Cadbury chocolate, gardening, traveling and books. Her keen wit and generous spirit will be missed. Likely the shock of outliving the Queen was simply too much for her.
Thanks to the staff of Martindale Place and the dedicated PSWs of Bayshore Home Care for making the last few years comfortable. As per Joan’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements have been entrusted to PASSFIELD MORTUARY SERVICES INC. (905) 682 0474. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at 1:00 pm in the chapel at Ridley College in St. Catharines. Reception to follow in the Lower School dining hall . In lieu of flowers, donations to The Niagara Children’s Centre, Save the Children or Doctors without Borders would have pleased her.
