Obituary for Ingrid Elisabeth Ohlsson

Ingrid Elisabeth Ohlsson (1933 – 2021)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ingrid Elisabeth Ohlsson on December 2, 2021, in her 88th year at the Welland NHS Hospital. Beloved wife of Jan (predeceased). Mother of Peter(Mary), Stefan(Dini), Jorgen(Sherry) and Catharina(James). Grandmother (“Farmor”) to Taylor(Maun), Jannika(Kyle), Victoria(Brett), Jon(Sarah), Paige(Jeff), Chelsea(Gavin) and Brianna. Great Farmor to Hunter and Averie.

Ingrid was born on March 31, 1933 in Malmö, Sweden to Sture and Ella Vinberg and was the eldest of 5 sisters. She leaves behind her little sister Karin, niece Elisabeth and nephew Mats of Sweden. She spent her youth in Malmö, helping to take care of her 4 sisters, working various small jobs to help support the family. In 1953 she married Jan Ohlsson and soon after they started their family. With our Dad’s career in the Swedish Police Service and many United Nations Peacekeeping tours of duty in both Cyprus and the Belgian Congo, Mom was often left on her own to raise the family. In the early 60’s Mom joined the Swedish Women's Voluntary Defence Organization, responsible for a great number of tasks in the national defence including the Army with the Home Guard, the Navy and the Air Force. Mom was trained to track Air Combat flights.

In 1967, Ingrid and Jan emigrated to Canada, settling in St. Catharines with their 4 children. Mom was a stay-at-home mom for most of her life. Her skills and abilities amaze us to this day. There was nothing she would not tackle. From oil painting to weaving, from square dancing to her love of puzzles. She especially enjoyed sewing and spent close to 25 years sewing performance costumes for Progressions Dance Studio, where she was known as Mama Ingrid by hundreds of dancers, big and small. In 1994, upon Dad’s retirement, they spent many wonderful years living in Florida before moving back to St.Catharines so as to be closer to their family.
Ingrid had a very small circle of friends. Family meant everything to her. She was our glue and constant cheerleader…….she will be missed.
Cremation has taken place. Private funeral to follow.
